I needed a box of tissues after reading the script! Having recently become a mother, I was particularly moved and in awe of Anne’s narrative and her relationship with Jonathan. I couldn’t say no to being a part of this powerful heart-felt work which deals with such an important subject matter.

The entire creative team feel a strong responsibility to de-stigmatise mental health and in particular schizophrenia through this play. It is a deeply complex topic to portray on stage, and as such requires constant questioning of the best way to represent its nuances. I am very conscious of not portraying Jonathan as ‘crazy’, but instead to represent what is happening to him through a considered movement quality. At times the approach is quite raw, and at other times it has been about demonstrating it through the physical relationship between characters in an abstract way. 

I have mainly collaborated with Leticia and the actors. My role has been to assist the team in choreographing particular scenes, movement pathways and in particular, the physical vocabulary of Jonathan through his many stages of dealing with schizophrenia. This has been through testing ideas with Leticia, workshopping movement options with the actors and physically demonstrating the movement myself. 

With so many supporting characters coming in and out of the storyline, the play has a constant rapid rhythm to it. There is a kind of unravelling momentum which has influenced the movement, the flow and overlap of the characters’ entrances, exits and pathways, and the use of the space and props. For some of the actors there is almost as much going on off stage as there is on!
