Neglected Musicals will present LoveMusik from June 24, in the Downstairs Theatre at Belvoir for limited shows

Featuring the music of Kurt Weill across all of his career, LoveMusik follows the lives of the unlikeliest of lovers – the brilliant, intellectual German composer Kurt Weill and a lusty girl from the streets of Vienna who became his muse and star, Lotte Lenya. With a book by Alfred Uhry (Pulitzer Prize winner, Driving Miss Daisy), LoveMusik is an epic romance, set in Berlin, Paris, Broadway and Hollywood, spanning 25 years in the lives of this complicated couple. From their courtship and early collaborations in Europe, through their journey to America and the debut of the landmark musical The Threepenny OperaLoveMusik gets deep inside this fascinating partnership. The musical features some of Weill’s best-loved songs, including Speak Low, Surabaya Johnny, It Never Was You, Mack the Knife, September Song, and Pirate Jenny.

“LoveMusik is a celebration of the art, passion, and personal sacrifices that defined Kurt Weill’s career – shedding light on his relationship with lover and muse Lotte Lenya, and his dazzling creative partnership with Bertolt Brecht,” said director Miranda Middleton.  “Brecht and Weill’s artistic mission to expose the corruption, hypocrisy, and greed of modern capitalist society feels more vital than ever.”

NEGLECTED MUSICALS is a theatre initiative dedicated to presenting musical theatre that has never (or rarely) been seen in Australia.  The musicals are presented with scripts in hand, and with piano accompaniment after only a day’s rehearsal.
