It Just
Stopped

By Stephen Sewell
Directed by Neil Armfield

  • Venue Upstairs Theatre
  • Dates 13 Sep – 29 Oct 2006

In a celebration to open the newly refurbished Belvoir St Theatre, Neil Armfield was reunited with long time collaborator and one of Australia’s most important storytellers, Stephen Sewell (The Blind Giant is Dancing and Three Furies), to present the hotly anticipated world premiere season of Stephen’s latest play.

A savage comedy of manners, It Just Stopped explores our relationship to art, globalisation, death, technology, America, Campari, cardboard boxes and slavery. Sewell’s play is funny and shocking in turn. It holds the mirror up to the things we value today and asks the questions: what will we value the day the world just stops, and what would we be willing to trade for our own survival?

What begins as a sparkling dream in the style of the golden age of American cinema ends as an existential nightmare for the ‘War on Terror’ generation. A sugar-coated knife slowly turned in the belly from the pen of our most provocative playwright.
