Apologia

By Enoch Mailangi
Directed by Tait De Lorenzo

  • Venue Downstairs Theatre
  • Dates 26 MAY – 6 JUNE 2020

Heather is grappling with what it means to say sorry. Exhausting all her social capital, she’s been coerced in to a long and humiliating public display of regret by the unrelenting gods of PR. Now our audiences are peeling back the layers of a complex woman who is tired, but more importantly unapologetically self-revealing, allowing whoever interacts with her to see inherent hypocrisy that she displays.

Apologia is a new experimental comedy by Enoch Mailangi, and an investigation into apology culture. It draws majorly from notable  expressions of regret as a blue-print, and then questions how the attempted destruction of rhetoric will affect the theatre-world. Inspired by Kevin Rudd’s 2008 Apology Speech, Mailangi’s work is a self-reflective one-woman piece that draws from their own experience as a product of the stolen generation. Fusing the personal and political, it asks what our idols have to gain from saying “I’m sorry”.
