Belvoir runs a series of professional learning workshops for teachers throughout the year in both metropolitan Sydney and regional NSW. Teachers learn from industry professionals and are provided with comprehensive teaching outlines and practical activities to take back to the classroom.

COSTUME DESIGN FUNDAMENTALS

Designer Imogen Ross explores the essential principles of costume design and offers starting points for theatre in relation to approaching the individual project. This costume design workshop includes practical design activities and gives you the chance to examine a professional costume designer’s portfolio.

During the workshop you will be introduced to:
• Process of designing costumes from initial design ideas to the final costume on stage
• The elements that make an effective costume design
• Role of costume design in the overall production
• Tools available to the costume designer: line, colour and texture
• Activities and strategies for teaching costume design in the classroom
• Q & A with designer Imogen Ross and participating teachers

APPROACHES TO MONOLOGUE PERFORMANCE

Actor and Director Anna Houston introduces the elements that make up an engaging monologue and offers practical approaches to the individual project. In this workshop you will learn to teach by example through practical activities to explore the dramatic concepts of character, goal, audience, conflict, stakes & staging.

During the workshop you will be introduced to:
• How to build physicality and vocalisation techniques to enhance performance
• The process of breaking down a script to find objectives, motivations and actions
• Role of physicality and internal motivations for characterisation
• Tools available to an actor when rehearsing a monologue and seeking feedback
• Activities and strategies for teaching monologue performance in the classroom
• Q & A with actor and director Anna Houston and other participating teachers

APPROACHES TO MAKING A MONOLOGUE

Playwright, Actor and adaptor Benedict Hardie will unpack the elements of creating a monologue text with action, tension, conflict and character. Learn dramaturgical techniques in building and adapting an original monologue piece from a variety of source materials. The workshop includes practical activities in structure, story and character development.

During the workshop you will be introduced to:
• Principles of dramatic action
• Strategies for bringing characters to life
• Writing dialogue and stage direction
• Approaches to redrafting and structure
• Rehearsal room techniques for honing the draft
• Q & A with actor and writer Benedict Hardie and other participating teachers
