Megan Wilding’s acclaimed battle of wits and some home truths.
Josh’s mum was a famous tennis legend, and he’s lived in her shadow all his life. But now she’s gone, and on the evening of her funeral, he meets Ray. She can return serve – and they hit it off over a long, bittersweet night of memory, sparring and revelation.
Will they? Won’t they? Or is that the wrong question? Is this a romance, a wake, a game – or something else?
The Malthouse Melbourne hit comes to Belvoir for a strictly limited Sydney Festival showing.
Megan Wilding needs no introduction to our stage as an actor, but now she’s written a fine play, which we’re confident will continue the strong recent history of showcasing the best black storytelling in the land as part of Sydney Festival’s BlakOut. Megan and Rick rallied like champs when I saw this in Melbourne earlier this year – great opening serve to a great year. – Eamon

Megan Wilding is a proud Gamilaroi person and and a graduate from WAAPA. She has performed in many theatre productions, including The Rover at Belvoir Street Theatre, Stolen, The Seagull, Blithe Spirit, Banging Denmark and Blackie Blackie Brown at Sydney Theatre Company, Animal Farm at Black Swan Theatre and A Little Piece Of Ash, which she wrote, directed and performed in for Jack Rabbit Theatre at KXT.
Megan appeared in feature film We Are Still Here which opened the 2022 Sydney Film Festival and screened at the Toronto International Film Festival. She has been seen in numerous television productions including Mystery Road: Origin, The Moth Effect and Gold Diggers. She is the recipient of the Balnaves Indigenous Playwright’s Award and the Griffin Award as well as a Casting Guild of Australia Rising Star Award. Megan will next be seen in Stan series Sunny Nights.

Jessica Arthur
Jess Arthur is one of the most prolific main-stage theatre directors. Her productions include The Wolves for Old Fitz and subsequent 2019 Belvoir season. Jess was Resident Director at Sydney Theatre Company 2018 – 2022, directing productions Chalkface, The Tenant Of Wildfell Hall, Wonnangatta, Banging Denmark, Mosquitos and Home I’m Darling.
Jessica also worked as Assistant Director on The Harp In The South Part I and Part II, Dinner, Chimerica and Endgame for Sydney Theatre Company, as well as Miss Julie for the Melbourne Theatre Company.
Her most recent production was the world premiere of The Dictionary of Lost Words for State Theatre Company South Australia and Sydney Theatre Company, which had a sell-out season in 2023 and a return season in Melbourne 2024.

Amy Cater
Amy Cater is part of the first cohort of qualified Intimacy Coordinator practitioners, training and working since 2018 when the profession first arrived in Australia. Previous stage works include A Streetcar Named Desire, Cost of Living, Is God Is, Seventeen, Jacky, Cyrano, Sunday, Bernhardt/Hamlet, Fun Home, As You Like It (Melbourne Theatre Company); Oscar (The Australian Ballet); and &Juliet (Michael Cassel Group). Selected screen credits include Love Me, The Newsreader, The Rooster, Bad Behaviour, The Clearing, Safe Home, Swift St, Sleeping Dogs, Erotic Stories, Better Man, Inside and Exposure. Amy has 20 years’ experience working with sexuality, embodiment, consent and intimacy; specifically within the adult industry, client therapy and education spaces. Amy was a director/senior photographer of ethical erotica for 4 years. She is a qualified psychosomatic therapist, sexological bodyworker and somatic sex educator. Amy has a trained background in theatre, dance and the performing arts. Amy mentors and consults on sexuality and gender best practice. Her work in LGBTQIA+ advocacy and education is a key component of her cultural influence in the Intimacy Coordinator industry.
