Join Belvoir’s Artistic Director, Eamon Flack and writer, collaborator and co-director S. Shakthidharan for a conversation about their creative partnership and contribution to contemporary Australian theatre. Ahead of the opening of The Jungle and the Sea this conversation offers an opportunity to hear directly from the artists behind a production.

With many years of working together, Shakthi and Eamon have – and continue to – develop a body of work that reshapes the possibilities of Australian storytelling. Together they have created epic, ambitious theatre that begins with deeply personal questions of identity, migration, family and belonging, and resonates on stages around the world.

From the landmark success of Counting and Cracking to the sweeping vision of The Jungle and the Sea, their collaboration has demonstrated how stories rooted in specific communities can speak powerfully to global audiences. What does it mean for a Sri Lankan story, written and developed in Australia, to travel to audiences in Edinburgh, New York and beyond? How does a long-term creative partnership sustain works of such scale, complexity and emotional depth?

Reviewing the New York season of Counting and Cracking, Helen Shaw in The New Yorker praised the way the work transforms histories of conflict into theatrical joy.

Following the discussion, audience members will have the opportunity to purchase copies of Shakthi’s memoir Gather Up Your World in One Long Breath and have them signed.
