Mitchell Butel

Mitchell is the Artistic Director of State Theatre Company South Australia and is soon to appear in Belvoir’s co-production of Dance Nation with STCSA. He holds four Helpmann Awards, three Sydney Theatre Awards and two Green Room Awards for his work as a performer and a director over the last three decades. Performing highlights include The Government Inspector, Angels in America, Strange Interlude, A View from the Bridge, Dead Heart (Belvoir), Mr Burns: A Post-Electric Play (STCSA / Belvoir), Unidentified Human Remains… (STCSA), Pinocchio, Rumpelstiltskin (Windmill / STCSA), Stones in his Pockets, The Venetian Twins (Queensland Theatre), The Merchant of Venice, Othello (Bell Shakespeare), The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui, Arms and the Man, Romeo and Juliet, Mourning Becomes Electra, Tartuffe, Six Degrees of Separation (Sydney Theatre Company), Disgraced, Urinetown, Tomfoolery, Piaf (Melbourne Theatre Company), Meow Meow’s Little Match Girl, Woyzeck (Malthouse), South Pacific, The Mikado (Opera Australia), Killing Time, My Vagabond Boat (Adelaide Cabaret Festival), A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder, Sugar, The Producers, Little Me, Hair (The Production Company) and commercial productions of A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Avenue Q and Little Shop of Horrors.

Film and TV credits include Holding the Man, Gettin’ Square, The Bank, Strange Fits of Passion, Dark City, Stateless, Deep Water, Hiding, Janet King and Rake. He also holds two AFI nominations for his work in Australian feature films. Mitchell’s directing credits include the Sydney and Melbourne seasons of Violet (Blue Saint / Hayes Theatre) which received three Sydney Theatre Awards including Best Director of a Musical and Best Production of a Musical, Spring Awakening (ATYP – Sydney Theatre Award Best Production for Young People), Porgy and Bess, The Bernstein Songbook and Funny Girl (Sydney Symphony Orchestra), Candide (Sydney Opera House / Sydney Philharmonia), Marjorie Prime (Ensemble Theatre), Dead Cat Bounce (Griffin), An Act of God (Darlinghurst Theatre Company – co-director) and Caroline, or Change (Hayes Theatre). Mitchell is a proud member of Actors Equity.
