Michael Waters

Michael has been recognised and awarded in Australia and internationally for Sound Design in drama, opera and musical theatre. He commenced his career working with iconic Australian rock & roll bands and has toured with the likes of Frank Sinatra, Peter Allen, Sting, Eurythmics, Diana Ross, Elvis Costello and many more. While touring internationally with some of the greatest music artists of all time – Genesis, Pink Floyd, Phil Collins, David Bowie, Mick Jagger, Paul McCartney, Keith Richards and The X-Pensive Winos, he realised that those rock & roll shows were, indeed, theatrical.

Keen to pursue the more creative side of sound design, Michael ventured into musical theatre and drama and has become a prolific sound designer within Australasia, with his musical theatre designs including Priscilla Queen Of The Desert and Atomic going worldwide; and dramatic works that include The Time Machine and The Woman In Black garnering him rave reviews.

Original sound designs include: Muriel’s Wedding, My Fair Lady, Fangirls, Drummer Queens, Doctor Zhivago, The Tap Pack (USA tour 2020), Bran Nue Dae, Dream Lover, Atomic (Sydney & Off Broadway, New York), In The Heights (SOH), Anthony Warlow with Faith Prince, Priscilla, and Hugh Jackman’s Broadway to Oz. Operas include: The Rabbits, Dead Man Walking, Orpheus In The Underworld, and Plácido Domingo & Katherine Jenkins in Concert. Australian Associate Sound Design credits include: The Lion King, We Will Rock You, Grease, Aladdin, Frozen and Hamilton.

Michael’s awards include: Helpmann for Best Sound Design; Muriel’s Wedding; The King And I; The Woman In Black; Dusty – The Original Pop Diva; Green Room Awards for Best Sound Design; My Fair Lady; Dirty Dancing; Italy’s DAPA Award for Best Sound Design: Priscilla Queen Of The Desert.

Michael was a sound consultant for the recent renovations for both the Lyric Theatre in Sydney, and the Regent Theatre in Melbourne.
