Xavier Samuel (Adore, The Twilight Saga: EclipseThe Seagull State Theatre Company of South Australia) is one of a cohort of talented Australian actors making big waves in Hollywood. We are thrilled to announce that he will be returning to Australia to appear in The Dog / The Cat. He will be joined by Andrea Demetriades (Janet King ABC1) and Benedict Hardie (The Water Diviner) in two interconnected tales of love and stupidity.

The Dog / The Cat is a delightful double bill from two of the hottest playwrights around, Brendan Cowell and Lally Katz. Something ridiculous and sweet and just for fun.

When two men share custody of a dog, and they both meet the same woman, with said dog, in the park, well nothing but hilarity can ensue. Cowell paints a not-so-flattering portrait of the tricky line between mateship and romance, and of the insatiable appetite of Jack Russell terriers for the most disgusting things they can find.

Owning a cat is not easy. Co-owning a cat with your ex is less easy. Co-owning a smart-talking, irritable, meddling cat with your ex is comedy. If this sounds to you like the kind of thing Lally Katz (Stories I Want to Tell You in Person, Neighbourhood Watch) should write, you’re right. There is no-one who does charming, funny and unlikely quite like Katz.

Cowell was originally cast in The Dog / The Cat but his commitments with the feature film adaption of Ruben Guthrie means he will no longer be appearing in the play. Given Cowell’s unexpected departure we are very fortunate to have such a talented replacement.

Under the direction of Ralph Myers (Peter Pan) this will be the romantic comedy that proves romance is not dead, but it might not be compatible with pets.
