Janakan was first introduced to Indian classical music (Karnatic) under the guidance of his father and guru, Sri R. Suthanthiraraj. He has had further extensive training in Mridangam under Mridanga Virtuoso Sri Ravi M. Ravichandhira (Melbourne) and advanced training under Maestro Guru Kaaraikkudi R. Mani (India). Janakan, is currently under the guidance of Mridangam “Nada Oli” Melakaveri K. Balaji (India). With over 10 years experience as a performing artist he has worked closely with many reputable Indian dance/theatre companies in Australia. In 2016 he produced the music for Rasana school of Aesthetic Arts, Rasalayam – A neo-classical Indian dance production. Janakan has performed alongside eminent world artists including Flute Maestro Dr N. Ramani, Padma Vibushan Dr K.J Yesudas, Padma Shree A. Kanyakumari and Indian music director G.V. Prakash. He is also one of the co-founders of the band, Eastern Empire, having performed at the Sydney Festival, Parramatta “Parramasala” Festival and Australian World Music Expo.
