Workshops for individual students exploring theatre
These practical workshops offer insights from professional artists giving students a head start in finding creative ways to tackle their own projects. Workshops are perfectly timed to give students a strong starting point for their design and writing projects ahead of the summer break.
Belvoir offer a range of workshops, from monologue performance to costume and set design. Workshops for students are typically held at Belvoir and are suitable for students in year 10, 11 and 12. We offer some of our workshop topics as Digital sessions, as online, interactive workshops which students all over Australia can participate in.
HSC IP Workshops
We run a series of workshops each year to provide industry insight into areas related to the HSC Drama Individual Projects. These are suitable for year 11 students who have commenced their HSC course in Term 4, or are doing a compressed curriculum.

Student Workshops at Belvoir are arranged for individual students to book in, with their peers or independently.
HSC IP Set Design
This workshop is run in two parts. Participants can book for one part only or for both parts.

PART ONE:
INTRODUCTION TO SET DESIGN

Designer Katja Handt takes participants through principles and elements of theatrical set design and approaches to working on the HSC Drama IP. This workshop includes practical activities in set design, giving participants the opportunity to view a designer’s portfolio. During the workshop participants will explore:
- The process of designing a set for a show from the first script reading to opening night
- The role of set design in the overall production and the director’s vision
- The tools available to the set designer: three dimensional shape and texture
- How to use a floor plan, scale and a scale model

PART TWO:
MODEL MAKING
1.00pm-5.00pm, Saturday 27 February
Designer Katja Handt leads participants in an intensely practical workshop where you will learn how to read and work with scale and how to translate a technical drawing into a 3D model. During the workshop you will learn:
- Basic techniques for creating shapes, textures and props in the model box and
- How to art finish miniatures to resemble reality
- How to present a model box when it is finished
Please note that you will need to bring some model making materials to this workshop. A list of materials and where to buy them will be provided after booking.

HSC IP Costume Design
INTRODUCTION TO COSTUME DESIGN

Designer Imogen Ross explores the essential principles of costume design and offers starting points for theatre in relation to approaching the individual project. This costume design workshop includes practical design activities and gives students the chance to examine a professional costume designer’s portfolio.
During the workshop students will be introduced to:
• Process of designing costumes from initial design ideas to the final costume on stage
• The elements that make an effective costume design
• Role of costume design in the overall production
• Tools available to the costume designer: line, colour and texture

HSC IP Monologues
PERFORMING MONOLOGUES SERIES
Digital
Actor and Playwright
Benedict Hardie explores the elements that make up an engaging monologue with practical approaches to the individual project. In this workshop students will learn dramatic concepts of character, goal, audience, conflict, stakes & staging.
Join this series for one part or both.
PART ONE:
Making your Monologue

Part one explores original text and how to make the most out of a self-written piece.
During the workshop students will be introduced to:
• Adapting and finding clues in source material
• The process of building a script with objectives, motivations and actions
• Creating a robust character within the text

Performing Monologues

Part two explores performing techniques. During the series students will be introduced to:
• How to build physicality and vocalisation techniques to enhance performance
• The process of breaking down a script to find objectives, motivations and actions
• Role of physicality and internal motivations for characterisation
• Tools available to an actor when rehearsing a monologue and seeking feedback
