Mark Colvin (1952 – 2017)

All of us at Belvoir are so sad to learn of the passing of Mark Colvin.

To say Mark was a giant of Australian journalism is an immense understatement. He fearlessly reported from all over the world for more than forty years, and earned the respect of a nation for his tenacity, intellect, and ability to cut to the truth of a story.

Mark was extraordinarily generous with us throughout the process of bringing Tommy Murphy’s play Mark Colvin’s Kidney to our stage earlier this year. He might have grumbled a bit about having his photo taken, but he gave many interviews and spoke so passionately about organ donation. He said many times that if the play led to just one donation it would all be worth it. Please consider registering as an organ donor in his honor.

Tommy Murphy paid tribute to Mark, saying ‘It was a privilege to be granted permission to write a play about Mark Colvin and his remarkable friendship with Mary-Ellen Field. He approached the project, as he did all things in his life, with utmost integrity. We are all enriched by our contact with Mark, either in person or on the airwaves.

‘My condolences are with Mark’s family and his colleagues at the ABC’.

Director of Mark Colvin’s Kidney, David Berthold said on Facebook earlier today, ‘I was honoured earlier this year to direct Mark Colvin’s Kidney, about his friendship with Mary-Ellen Field (who selflessly donated her kidney to Mark) but which also touched on other aspects of Mark’s life, including the rare auto-immune disease which finally took his life after a 20 year battle.

‘I didn’t know Mark well, but feel (like many Australians) that I did. His dedication to ensuring that Tommy’s play would be the best and most honest it could be was just jaw-dropping. He allowed the project into his life with an open heart and without hesitation, wanting it to live its own theatrical life, even though it would, inevitably, reveal some of the private Mark.’

Mark’s family have asked for donations to the Prince of Wales Hospital Foundation in lieu of flowers. Our thoughts are with his family and Mary-Ellen Field at this sad time.
