Powerful depiction of the extraordinary life of Albert Namatjira

Elea was born in the desert of Arrernte country, Central Australia in 1902. Two years later he was baptised Albert. Not until his first solo exhibition of watercolour landscapes in 1938, thirty-three years later, did he sign his work with his father’s name for the first time: Albert Namatjira.

At the height of his fame, his shows sold out in minutes. While his whole community were wards of the state, he was a citizen; free to buy a house but not to have his children sleep in it. Imprisoned for sharing alcohol with his friends, he died a broken man.

Fifty years later, two of the creative forces behind Ngapartji Ngapartji (Trevor Jamieson and Scott Rankin), together with Wayne Blair, bring us this retelling of Albert Namatjira’s life story in words, music and through the creation of a growing artwork. For this production two of Namatjira’s descendants – third generation water-colour artists – will be on-stage creating it.

A unique performance piece, Namatjira is a tribute to a man who painted his own country so that people saw it fresh. As the artist’s descendants cover Belvoir St Theatre’s roof and walls with a massive drawing of Namatjira’s country, your students will experience his true story expand before their eyes.
